The Laughter of Birds

Hyenas smile and cats do smirk,

monkeys giggle and dogs get thrilled.

They make me wonder:

What is the sound of the birds’ laughter?

They seem to sing all the time-

the same music, with the same rhymes

the same tune, the same songs.

Is there a distinction

for their cheer and sorrow?

How would we know,

if their ballad is happy or sad?

This reminds me of my neighbor,

how easily he produces tears.

For he cries in gaiety, but also when he’s gloomy-

to express his anger, to convey his fears.

There is little difference,

leaving people to ponder.

At least the birds

whether delighted or weeping

cause no distress

to whomever hears the songs they sing.
